The objective of this program is to establish comprehensive and uniform procedures to ensure that new and existing tanning facilities in each Palm Beach County are operated in accordance with applicable laws and rules. The procedures apply to all environmental health staff involved in the administration and implementation of the tanning facility program component.
Exposure to non-ionizing radiation, such as ultraviolet light, has been implicated in the occurrence of acute injuries and chronic diseases. Tanning devices expose users of the equipment to ultraviolet radiation to affect a tan. DOH-Palm Beach regulates tanning facilities to prevent or reduce the risk of occurrence of those injuries and diseases that may occur due to the exposure. Facilities are also regulated to prevent the occurrence of communicable diseases associated with the lack of sanitary operation of the facility. To achieve this end, DOH-Palm Beach licenses and inspects tanning facilities for compliance with the department's safety and sanitation standards.
