The division of Epidemiology and Disease Control:
- Conducts disease surveillance activities of reportable communicable diseases/conditions that occur in Palm Beach County (PBC)
- Conducts epidemiological investigations and follow-up of diseases/conditions or outbreaks to determine and institute control and prevention measures
- Reviews and identifies trends of health indicators in the county
- Conducts enhanced surveillance of PBC hospital emergency room visits through ESSENCE (Electronic Surveillance System for the Early Notification of Community Based Epidemics) to detect possible bioterrorism events, disease outbreaks or other events of public health significance
- Participates in preparedness planning, response and recovery efforts in dealing with potential threats and disasters of all kinds
- Provides education and information on diseases and disease prevention to residents, visitors, medical providers, and community partners
- Publishes and disseminates public health information, statistical reports, annual reports, health alerts, and education material

Disease Reporting Information
Health care and laboratory providers are required to report conditions of public health importance to the Florida Department of Heath.
